Summer Travel Safety: Staying Healthy While Away From Home
Summer is the perfect time to visit family, explore new destinations, or enjoy a well-deserved vacation. A little planning before you leave can help you stay healthy and safe so you can focus on making memories.
Before your trip, pack enough medications for your entire stay, plus a few extra days in case your return is delayed. Keep medications in their original containers and carry an up-to-date medication list that includes your prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, allergies, and emergency contacts.
Warm weather and increased activity can quickly lead to dehydration, especially for older adults. Drink water regularly, even if you do not feel thirsty, and try to limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day. Wear lightweight clothing, use sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade or air conditioning when needed.
Traveling also means navigating unfamiliar surroundings. Uneven sidewalks, hotel bathrooms, and poor lighting can increase the risk of falls. Wear supportive shoes, take your time, and use handrails whenever available. If you use a cane or walker at home, be sure to bring it with you.
Finally, plan ahead for any medical needs. Know where the nearest urgent care or hospital is located, bring your insurance information, and keep important phone numbers easily accessible. A little preparation can provide peace of mind and help ensure your summer adventures are safe, healthy, and enjoyable.
